Referral program software: how to choose, and when you need an affiliate tool instead

Referral program software turns happy customers into a growth channel: give a friend a discount, earn a reward when they buy. Here's how customer referral programs differ from affiliate programs, what to look for in the software, the tools worth knowing in 2026 for SaaS and ecommerce, and when one tool can run both.

“Give $20, get $20.” Referral programs are one of the oldest growth tactics: your customers already like you, and a friend’s recommendation carries weight. Referral program software runs the mechanics: a link or code for each customer, a reward when a friend buys, and checks against people referring themselves.

It’s easy to confuse with affiliate software, and some tools do both. This post explains the difference, what to look for in referral program software, the main tools in 2026 for SaaS and for ecommerce, and when it makes sense to run referrals and affiliates on one platform. We build OpenPartner, which leans to the affiliate side but can run an in-app referral program; we’ll say where it fits. Vendor details come from public pages, checked in October 2026, and are listed at the end.

Referral programs vs affiliate programs

They both pay people for sending you customers. The difference is who those people are, and what they expect.

Vendors that sell both kinds of program draw the line in the same place. Referral programs use existing customers and usually reward both sides with credit or a discount. Affiliate programs use outside promoters and pay a cash commission, often on every renewal. The edges blur: some referral programs pay cash, and some affiliates started out as customers.

You can run both. Customers get a refer-a-friend offer inside the product, and creators and partners get an affiliate program with a cash commission. The question is whether one tool runs both well, or you need two.

What to look for in referral program software

Where the program lives

  • An embedded widget inside your app or site, with a referral link, share buttons and the customer’s rewards. Fastest to launch. It looks like the vendor’s widget unless you style it.
  • A hosted referral page the customer opens from an email or your account page.
  • An API, or “headless”, so you build the referral page in your own product and the tool handles links, attribution and rewards behind it. More work up front, and it looks native. Our guide to running an in-app refer-and-earn program walks through this approach.
  • Post-purchase and email placements, for ecommerce: the referral offer on the thank-you page and in order emails, where shoppers see it right after buying.

How rewards are delivered

The reward shapes the program’s cost as much as the software price does.

  • Account credit or a free month costs you margin rather than cash, and keeps the referrer using the product. It needs the tool to talk to your billing system, or a manual step.
  • A discount coupon for the friend, and sometimes for the referrer, is the usual ecommerce shape. Check whether the tool creates codes in your store or billing system for you.
  • Cash or gift cards cost real money and bring tax and payout questions. Some tools deliver gift cards through a rewards provider.

Fraud checks

Referral programs attract self-referrals: a customer refers their own second email address to collect both sides of the reward. Look for checks on matching emails, IP addresses, devices and payment methods. Also look for a delay before rewards are released, so refunds and cancellations don’t pay out, and a review queue for anything suspicious.

Integrations

Ecommerce referral tools depend on their Shopify (or WooCommerce, BigCommerce) app. SaaS referral tools need your billing system, such as Stripe, Chargebee or Paddle, so a referral is credited when the friend pays, not just when they sign up.

Referral program software in 2026

The market splits three ways: tools for SaaS, which connect to your billing system; tools for ecommerce, which live in your Shopify store; and sales-led platforms for large consumer brands. Prices are as published in October 2026.

For SaaS

Cello puts a referral panel inside your logged-in product, aimed at B2B SaaS. It’s priced by the revenue referrals bring in: Start is $65/month billed yearly ($95 monthly) for up to $10,000 of referral ARR, Grow is $200/month billed yearly ($300 monthly) for up to $50,000, and Scale is $750 for up to $100,000. Cello pays referrers itself, by PayPal, and Venmo in the US on request. It’s a widget rather than an API you build on, and its branding can’t be removed.

GrowSurf runs referral and affiliate programs, priced by participants: Startup from $179/month for 2,500 and Business from $449/month for 10,000, with a 14-day trial. Rewards go out as gift cards through Tango Card or Tremendous, as coupons and credits in Stripe, Chargebee or Recurly, or by PayPal. You can embed its widget or build on its JavaScript SDK and REST API. Its fraud checks include burner email addresses and data-center IP addresses.

Viral Loops started in pre-launch waitlists and newsletter growth. It’s priced by participants: Start-up is $35/month billed yearly ($49 monthly) for 1,000. Customer referral campaigns start on Plus, $99/month billed yearly ($139 monthly) for 5,000. There’s a 14-day trial. It offers a widget, hosted pages, a JavaScript SDK and a REST API. Rewards are delivered by hand or through Zapier and webhooks on Plus. Automatic Stripe coupons and credits and Tremendous gift cards start on Growing, $159/month billed yearly. Its help center describes flagging suspicious referrals for you to review; its pricing page also lists automatic blocking, so check which plan includes it.

Referral Rock has one Operator plan at $250/month (10% less billed yearly), with a 14-day trial and setup help from an advisor. Referrers use a hosted portal and landing pages rather than a widget in your app. Rewards can be gift cards, cash, account credit or coupons, paid through Tango, PayPal or Wise, with an approval queue for flagged payouts. It integrates with Stripe, Chargebee, HubSpot and Salesforce, and its default rules block self-referrals by email address, IP address and cookie.

Affiliate tools that also run customer referrals. If you want one tool for both programs, four SaaS affiliate tools can do it, with different amounts of work:

  • Tolt lists an in-app referral widget on every plan, with credit, coupon or cash rewards and a discount for the friend. Its plans start at $99/month. We found the widget described on its pricing and product pages but not in its help center, so ask for the setup docs.
  • FirstPromoter lets you embed its partner dashboard in your app, with automatic sign-in, on Business ($99/month) and up. Non-monetary rewards, like credits or free months, and discounts for the friend are on every plan.
  • Dub has an embedded referral dashboard on Advanced ($300/month) and up. Non-monetary rewards are shown in the dashboard, and you deliver them yourself from Dub’s webhooks.
  • Rewardful does it through its API: you create each customer as an affiliate tied to their Stripe customer. When a reward is due, your code credits their Stripe balance and marks the payout paid. You build the referral page yourself.

For ecommerce

ReferralCandy is built for Shopify, with WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Squarespace too. Every plan has every feature, and you pick by volume: Basic is $39/month plus a 10.5% success fee on sales to referred new customers, falling to Enterprise at $799/month plus 0.25%. Its pricing page sets out which orders count. There’s a 7-day trial and no contract. Referrers can earn store credit or cash by PayPal, Venmo or bank transfer. It blocks obvious self-referrals automatically and flags near-matches for review.

Smile.io is a loyalty program for Shopify with referrals included on every plan, from Free (200 orders a month) to Smile Plus at $999/month billed yearly. Referrers can earn discounts, free shipping, free products, gift cards, store credit or points. The friend gets a discount, free shipping or a free product. High-risk referrals are blocked automatically.

Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals has a free plan, and Pro starts at $199/month, including your first 500 orders a month. Referrers and friends earn points or coupons. It works with Shopify, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud and WooCommerce.

For large consumer brands

Friendbuy, Talkable, Extole and Mention Me are sales-led platforms for big retail, subscription and financial brands. None publishes prices. Talkable describes a flat monthly fee on a 12-month agreement, with an implementation fee equal to one month, and Mention Me quotes by your online revenue. All four offer widgets, APIs and configurable fraud rules. Reward formats vary: Extole delivers gift cards through Tango Card as well as Stripe credits and codes, Friendbuy and Talkable work with gift-card providers, and Mention Me centres on discount codes and account credit. If you need multi-brand, multi-market programs and a team to help run them, start here.

If you deliver rewards yourself

Tremendous isn’t referral software, but several of the tools above use it to send rewards. You can use it directly too. Gift cards and prepaid cards cost face value, with no platform fee. PayPal or Venmo payouts cost 4% (at least $0.25), or 6% if the recipient pays the fee, and funding by credit card adds 3%. That helps if your referral tool works out who’s owed what and leaves delivery to you.

When one tool can run referrals and affiliates

Running both programs on one platform has real advantages. One set of attribution rules decides who gets credit when a customer referral and an affiliate link touch the same sale. You get one place to see every partner and referrer, and one set of payout and refund rules.

It works when the tool handles both shapes well: low-friction, in-app referrals with credits or discounts for customers, and proper commission rules, attribution and payouts for affiliates. Check which one a tool was built for. A referral widget may not handle recurring commissions or partner payouts. An affiliate tool may ask customers to sign up for a separate partner portal, which is a lot to ask for a $20 credit.

Where OpenPartner fits

OpenPartner is affiliate and partner software first. It can also run a customer referral program inside your own app, headless:

  • Your page, our attribution. Your app creates a partner record for a customer behind the scenes and shows their link on a page in your product. Customers never see an OpenPartner login. The Refer & Earn starter kit has a working page, a setup script and the integration guide.
  • Two-sided rewards. Each referrer gets a code as well as a link. With the OpenPartner Stripe App connected (it’s in beta), the friend’s discount is created in your Stripe account behind the code, and using it credits the referrer. The discount rides on the code, not the link: a friend who arrives by link alone is credited to the referrer but gets no automatic discount.
  • The same rules as affiliates. Attribution that follows the friend’s account once your app links their signup to the click, refunds that reverse rewards, holding periods, and a review queue. Customers and affiliates can sit in separate programs with separate terms, in one ledger.
  • Rewards you deliver. OpenPartner works out what each referrer has earned and groups it into payouts. You deliver it as account credit in your billing, PayPal, a bank transfer or a gift card, then mark the payout paid.

It doesn’t have a drop-in widget, a Shopify app or gift-card delivery. It also doesn’t detect self-referrals: its fraud tools are flags on bursts of clicks from one IP address, manual flags, and the review queue, so check referrals yourself before rewards are approved. If you want a referral program live this afternoon on a Shopify store, an ecommerce referral tool is the faster path.

Revshare is 3% of partner-attributed revenue with no monthly fee, and Flex is $49 a month plus 1.5%. Each conversion is billed the larger of that rate and 10% of the referrer’s reward (5% on Flex). See pricing.

How to choose

  1. Who are your referrers? Customers: start with referral software. Publishers and creators: affiliate software. Both: check whether one tool handles both properly before buying two.
  2. What are you selling, and where? On Shopify, start with tools that have a strong Shopify app. For SaaS, start with tools that read your billing system.
  3. What will the reward be? Credit, discounts, cash or gift cards. Make sure the tool can deliver it without a manual step every week.
  4. How will it look in your product? A widget, a hosted page, or your own page on an API.
  5. What does it cost at 10× your current referrals? Some tools charge by plan, some by revenue, some per referral.
